Schlabach finished 3rd followed by Rex Wert and Bobby Schisler. • TYLER ROAHRIG CLAIMS HIS 4TH SUMMER SIZZLER VICTORY

Tyler Roahrig had to do it in style this year. The co-fast time qualifier came from deep in the pack to earn his 4th win at the Summer Sizzler. Earlier in the day, Tyler Roahrig qualified a 13.095 to tie Phil Bozell for the fastest car in the running of the 15th Annual Summer Sizzler.

The field would be set with a full inversion, putting 16th fastest Brian Ross on the Pole and our 2 fast time qualifiers at the back of the pack in the 8th row. Young TK Whitman started inside row 2 and would not need much time to take the early lead over Brian Ross. Whitman would lead up until lap 37 before veteran Jack Landis would takeover the top spot. After several cautions and MADHOUSE restarts later, Tyler Roahrig would work his way up to the front to challenge Landis for the lead on lap 61. Tyler never looked back after taking the lead. Landis came in a strong 2nd, followed by JR Roahrig, Bud Perry and Bobby Stremme. Co-fast time qualifier Phil Bozell finished 11 after several pit stops throughout the race.

Earlier in the evening, Greg Parr and Kevin Sauer held off defending Summer Sizzler champions Andy Bozell and Scott Hantz to earn the transfer postitions in the 20 lap last chance race.

Our 50 lap Hobby Stock feature witnessed several lead changes in the final half of the race as Derek Lundgren, Melissa Stemes and Spencer Wortinger all owned the top spot for several laps. But points leader Travis Schlabach proved to be the car to beat by making the winning pass with 4 laps remaining to take home the $1,000 top prize. Fast qualifier Darrel Click would finish in 2nd, followed by Stemes, Eric Kiser and Richard Courson.

  • BRENT JACK LEADS ALL 75 LAPS TO WIN DENNY NYARI MEMORIAL

Brent Jack had a rough start to the week. It started Thursday evening when Jack experienced mechanical problems before getting onto the track for practice. He then fought issues throughout practice and qualifying all day Saturday. Jack is accustomed to fast cars and bad luck and NPS including leading most of the Summer Sizzler last August before breaking. That luck changed Saturday night when Jack led all 75 laps, holding off a faster JR Roahrig for most of the race, to win his first ever feature at NPS. JR Roahrig finished 2nd, followed by Jacob Maynard, Jack Landis and Tyler Roahrig. Fast time of the night, Corey Ryman, finished 8th.

Ron Maynard won the Hobby Stocks feature in dominate fashion. Finishing 2nd was Travis Schlabach. Eric Kiser came in 3rd, followed by Kevin Witmer and Darrell Click. The points battle in this division will be worth the admission.

Mike Mast took home the checkered in the Mini Stock A after being involved in a 45 minute red flag caution that ended with his car being stuck by wheels to another competitor.

Brian Ragsdale won the first FWD feature of the season in a controversial last lap pass that made contact with race leader Jason Harmon that sent Harmon around in turn 2.

Remember, this season the top 5 in points advance to the Chase in the final 3 weeks of the season.

  • TYLER ROAHRIG WINS HIS ELITE 3RD SUMMER SIZZLER

Tyler Roahrig may not have been the fastest car on the property as Corey Ryman took that honor in qualifying, but there was no denying Tyler had the best car in the race. After Ryman threw his 3 dice to set the inversion at 6, Tyler had to start inside row 3. The inversion landed Brent Jack on the pole and he built up a half track lead on the field before breaking a water pump and taking his ride to the pits on lap 15. After Brent surrendered the lead to Jack Landis, the race would see its final lead change on lap 30 when Tyler got around Landis and never gave up the lead the rest of the way. Landis would finish a strong 2nd, followed by JR Roahrig, Andy Bozell and Kenny Whitman.

Ron Maynard, who finished 15th in the Sizzler, pulled double duty and won the $1,000 to win Hobby Stock main earlier in the night. Fast time and points leader Travis Schlabach had to leave the track on lap 31 due to problems and that left the door open for 2nd place Bobby Schisler to narrow his gap in the points race. Richard Courson would finish 3rd followed by Steve Williams and Bobby Schisler III.

  • WHO WAS JIM BLOUNT?

    By Ron Verash:

When the name Jim Blount is mentioned, some folks remember his early years, racing in the Super Modified and Late Models classes in the early 1960's. Others remember the ASA years, when Jim won back to back Championships in the late 60's, early 70's. And others recall, in his latter years, winning 6 consecutive Championships in the Late Models from 1990 to 1995.

To the beginning, Jim's father worked on race cars shortly after WWII. One of his drivers was Mike Miser, Sr. Naturally, Jim would help also, and that sparked an interest to even drive them one day. Tracks in that time included South Bend Motor Speedway, Playland Park, Sister's Lakes, Warsaw, Elkhart Speedway, and the Osceola Speedway. Jim's first race was at Playland Park in Mishawaka in 1950, which he incidentally won. Jim would race the Open Wheel Coupes, competing against the likes of Dick Good, Dick George, Dave Paul, Oscar Faye, Ned Bloom, Bill Reitz, Bob Newton, Kenny Fry,Cecil Wells, Bob Zeigler, Rex Crofoot, and Cecil Wells. Racing 4, 5, 6, times a week, the drivers really honed their craft, and when they ventured out of the area to compete, more often than not, a top finish recorded.

To the late 1950's, a fellow driver by the name of Jerry Osborn, designed a car, that featured frame supports from the top of the roll cage down to the front suspension. A very unique idea, but racing at that time was all about ideas. Ozzie was going into Drag Racing, and he sold Jim the car. Took some time and a few races, but Jim was able to win Features with this one of a kind design. Looking back now, this was the first "Downtube" chassis racer of it's kind. 20 years later, Dirt Sprint car technology went to this design, and cars still run this to this day.

Through the 60's, Jim raced the "Supers",Open Wheel Modifieds, plus the "Flyers", stock cars. Racing at South Bend, New Paris, Plymouth, plus Anderson, Jim won many races in both divisions. His competition included Denny Nyari, Jiggs Myers, Leroy Skiles, Ronnie Drake, Dude Weaver, Billy Jo Havens, Carl Jack Hall, Jim Sullivan, and Ernie Nash. He took a Tri State Super's Championship in 1967, plus winning the Blueberry Specials in 1967 and 68. And in one year, Jim competed at the Oswego, New York Speedway for Super Modifieds, and raced at Knoxville, Iowa Speedway for Sprint Cars. And in the same car.

Jim won the ASA Crown, in 1969, in his own car. For 1970, Jim hooked up with a team out of Central Indiana : Saxton Racing, and ran for the 1970 American Speed Association Championship. By mid season, Jim parted ways with that team, and drove for Don Higgins for the balance of the season. He still managed to win the ASA Title for that 1970 season. This was a new Stock car group, that traveled throughout the Midwest running at venues like Dayton{Oh} Speedway, Anderson,Winchester, Salem, in Indiana, Louisville {Ky} Fairgrounds, and the races were contested up to 500 laps. A different driving strategy, as the cars had to last 4 and 5 hour races. Jim took the Redbud 400 in both 69 and 70. His top competition included Moose Myers, Dave Sorg, Gene Prosser, L.J. Lines, Denny Miles, Gene Christie, Jack Shanklin, John Sommerville, Larry Moore, Don Gregory, at that time, some of the best in the business.

With Son, Bobby, starting his racing, Jim raced mostly in Northern Indiana in the mid, late 70's. The Late Models trasitioned from Slicks, to a Pro Trac treaded tire, and Jim ran against the best in the area, and won races.

Both Jim and Bobby, were running Late Models at South Bend, when in 1980, the Super Modifieds would return. Many of the Veterans from the 70's returned, including Buck Cravens, Ozzie, Willie Stutzman, Walt May, Carl Szymanski, Carl Jack Hall, and Tom Jewell. Wasn't long, Jim had a red 16 out there doing battles.

At that time, Jim opened up a car salvage business called Jim Blounts Auto Parts, off Highway 6 in Lapaz. A spot for car builders, both street and racing. Jim's business was on over a dozen cars at a time, as he helped many a racer, sometimes just giving the part, so a fellow competitor could race another time.

The Supers lasted a couple more years, and soon after, Jim ran a Blue #16. He stayed at South Bend, New Paris, Avilla, and Plymouth, racking up wins at all 4 tracks. From 1990 to 1995, Jim won Championships at the Capitol {Plymouth} Speedway, before he retired at the end of 1995.

  • RON MAYNARD MAKES LATE RACE PASS ON OUTSIDE TO SEAL VICTORY

Ron Maynard was determined to get back to his victory ways on Saturday night after watching his son bring home the checkered on opening night. Ron had to make a late race pass on the outside of his nephew, Jacob Maynard, to get the victory this week. Josh Sommers would close the gap but ran out of laps as he finished second, followed by Jacob Maynard, Steve Stacy, and Austin Maynard took home 5th in the Elite Distributing Late Model Sportsman feature.

Darrell Click made the most out of his season debut in a new car. After struggling all afternoon trying to put the finishing touches on the car, the work paid off as he held off fast time Travis Schlabach to win the Hobby Stock main. Following Schlabach came Bobby Schisler, Bryce Schaefer and Eric Kiser rounding off the top 5 in the Promotors Hobby Stock main.

With double features in the Mini Stock and FWD features, we seen multiple winners on the evening. Chad Wiser held off Marcus Carlson in both of the Mini Stock main while Chris Harman won the makeup FWD feature and Spencer Wortinger taking the night cap feature.

    Other winners are pictured below:

    5.16.15 Darrell Click

    5.16.15 Chad Wiser

    5.16.15 Chris Harman

    5.16.15 Spencer Wortinger

    5.16.15 Randy Huffman

    5.16.15 Rick Kiser

  • AUSTIN MAYNARD SHINED BRIGHTER THAN THE STARS ON SATURDAY

Austin Maynard led most of the way in taking home the $1,000 prize in the Elite Distributing 75. It wasn't easy for the young gun as he held off veterans Steve Stacy and his own father, Ron Maynard, for many of the 75 laps. Numerous times Steve Stacy got the restart on the outside after a caution and appeared to have a better car but Austin never let up and wound up in victory lane for the first race of the season. Stacy finished 2nd followed by Ron in 3rd, Nick Stremme 4th and Scott Frost 5th.

Another upset was in the brewing in the Hobby Stock main event as Rick Waterson outdueled many cars to win his first ever Hobby Stock main event. The win came after a rain shower ended the race on lap 22 of 30. After multiple attempts to keep the cars out on the track to keep it dry, mother nature finally won as did Rick Waterson. Bryce Shaefer finished a strong 2nd follwed by Bobby Shisler, Travis Schlabach and Kevin Gunkel.

The Mini Stock main, FWD main and Hobby Stock B was postponed due to rain and will be the first races on Saturday, May 16th at 7pm!

  • TYLER ROAHRIG WINS DENNY NYARI CLASSIC IN MUCH ANTICIPATED RETURN

Tyler Roahrig came from the back of the pack to win $3,200 in the 75 lap Denny Nyari Classic. Tyler returned to his outlaw roots for the first time since being injured in a crash last April at Salem that would sideline him for the entire 2014 season. The race was not given to Tyler, by any means, as he was spun out by his own father, JR Roahrig, after making a late race pass for the lead. JR tapped out, giving his son the lead back and would never look back. Jack Landis made a last lap pass on Flying Brian Ross to finish second.

Travis Schlabach won the Hobby Stock main after double dipping. Travis got out of his super late model and directly into his hobby stock to win the season debut. Marcus Carlson set fast time and came through with the Mini Stock main and Spencer Wortinger did the same in the FWD division.
